There may be better baseball movies, but none as beloved as baseballgirl's first crush; as Jake Taylor and the hapless Indians showed a teenaged girl how to fall in love with baseball. A beloved movie by old and young (at least those who begged their parents to let them watch a Rated-R movie), Major League captures the flavor and lifestyle of Major League Baseball perfectly. From the power hitter, to the aging pitching star, to the up-and-coming flame-thrower, to the injured catcher in his last season of glory, trying to balance his fame with some semblance of faithfulness to the woman he loves…and lost, to the capitalistic player who is in it solely for the contract, Major League delivers all of this without hitting a wrong note.

The movie starts out with the Indians mired in a decades-long slump. Ballpark tickets are given away to fans that remember the last time the Indians won a pennant, and attendance is slim, at best. We are introduced to the evil owner, who wants nothing more than to move the Indians out of Cleveland, but there is a catch: They have to lose it all.

The team assembled is a mix of nobodys, has-beens, never-will-be’s; yet in the most amazing, stirring way possible; the team--and the city who abandoned them--will come together for one last run at glory.
Major League perfectly captures the inside story of baseball; from Spring Training tryouts, including the devastating moment when players are cut from the big league team and sent down to the minor leagues; to the very realistic storylines of keeping a relationship alive amidst the temptations that come along with being a recognizable superstar.

Unlike its failed sequels, the original Major League is less of a pure comedy (even though it is funny), and more of a pure sports movie; eliciting the exact feeling of watching your favorite baseball team compete in a special season. It’s Rated “R” for about as much language as you can cram in a two-hour movie, along with a couple of implied sex scenes, but such is the behind-the-scenes life of professional baseball. You wouldn’t believe it any other way (see: “Major League: edited for airplane viewing” for proof of this).

All in all, if you want to root for baseball, regardless of your team affiliation, this is a must-see movie, and the Baseball Chix highest recommendation.
